講師紹介
私が語学の奥深さに気付かされたのは、イギリス留学時代のことです。
ある程度英語が理解できるようになっていた頃、映画を見に行きました。
その時みんなが笑っている場面で、一人だけ笑えていない自分がいたのです。
ショックでした。「なぜ自分だけ、皆についていけないのだろうか」と思いました。
そして語学とは単に言葉を理解するだけでは不十分だと言うことに気づかされました。
その国の文化や習慣も理解しなければ、真の意味で言語は理解できたことにはならない
という事を。
帰国してから約40年間、家庭教師や塾講師として英語関係の指導をしてきました。
そして最近なって、もう少し英語力をアップさせたいと思うようになり、
まず英検2級を受け、それは難なくパスしました。
次に準1級にチャレンジしましたが、それは思っていたほど簡単ではなく、
結構苦労しましたし、時間もかかりました。
その間ににいろいろ考えさせられました。「自分の勉強の仕方のどこが問題なのだろう？」
「どうすれば弱点をクリアできるのだろうか？」と…
それで、その時学べたノウハウを皆さんとシェアできたらと思っています。
先にも述べたように、英語を習得するには時間がかかります。
でも階段を1段1段上っていくことには達成感がありますし、
自分の将来を切り開くことにもつながります。
それで、皆さんがその階段を上るお手伝いをしたいと思っています。
I first realized the profound depth of language during my time studying abroad in the UK.
By then, I had reached a level where I could understand English to some extent,
so I decided to go watch a movie. However, there was a moment in the film
where everyone in the theater burst into laughter—except me.
I was shocked. “Why am I the only one who can’t keep up with everyone else?” I thought.
It was then that I realized that simply understanding the words of a language is not enough.
To truly understand a language, one must also grasp the culture
and customs of the country where it is spoken.
After returning to Japan, I spent nearly 40 years teaching English
as a private tutor and cram school instructor. Recently, I felt the urge to further improve
my English skills, so I started by taking the Eiken Grade 2 exam, which I passed with ease.
Next, I challenged myself with the Pre-Grade 1 exam,
but it turned out to be much more difficult than I had anticipated.
I struggled quite a bit and it took me a significant amount of time to prepare.
During this process, I reflected deeply: “What’s wrong with my study methods?”
and “How can I overcome my weaknesses?”
Through this experience, I gained valuable insights and techniques
that I would love to share with others.
As I mentioned earlier, mastering English takes time.
However, climbing the steps of progress one by one brings a sense of accomplishment
and opens up new opportunities for the future.
